DE PERE, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — The superintendent of the Unified School District of De Pere announced he is stepping down form his position at the end of the school year.
Christopher Thompson made the announcement during Monday’s Board of Education meeting.
Thompson became the district’s superintendent in 2022.
In a statement released to families, Thompson wrote he is stepping down due to health concerns:
Hello USDD Families:
I am writing to you today so you hear this message directly from me. Last month I shared with our staff that I have a chronic health condition called polycythemia vera (PV) that is caused by an acquired genetic mutation.
Yesterday evening (Monday, April 21), I discussed my ongoing health concerns and challenges with the USDD Board of Education. At the meeting, I informed them that my PV has progressed, and my time serving our school district will soon come to an end.
I am stepping down as the Superintendent of the Unified School District of De Pere at the end of the 2025-26 school year.
Please know that it has been a true honor to support and lead the District in teaching our community’s students. I believe education is a noble calling, one where we are lucky enough to be entrusted to guide children in their growth journey toward becoming the leaders of tomorrow. In that, I am blessed to have stood at the side of our staff during mutual professional endeavors. I thank them, and you, our families, for considering me a teammate in our most important work.
The Board of Education will discuss in the near future its plans filling the superintendent position.
