(WTAQ-WLUK) — We Energies is starting to restore natural gas service to Fox Valley homes and businesses affected by historic flooding.
Crews began reconnecting service Monday to about 200 customers in Fremont and Shiocton who were not affected by floodwaters.
As a safety precaution, We Energies temporarily disconnected natural gas service to about 2,400 customers in Fremont, New London and Shiocton last week.
We Energies is bringing in more than 100 field personnel from across Wisconsin to complete the restoration work. The company is working closely with customers, emergency management and local officials to restore service as quickly and safely as possible.
How customers can be prepared to have natural gas service reconnected
Customers with natural gas appliances exposed to floodwaters must have them inspected by a qualified HVAC contractor before service can be restored. If appliances are safe to use, the contractor will provide a signed form for We Energies. Damaged or unsafe appliances must be repaired or replaced before reconnection.
Customers who did not have appliances exposed to floodwater do not need to have an inspection.
How We Energies will restore service to customers
Once floodwaters reach safe levels, We Energies crews will inspect its system and begin adding natural gas back into its pipes. After crews verify that natural gas is flowing safely, they will begin turning service back on at customers’ meters.
The significant flooding submerged approximately 1,000 natural gas meters between Fremont, New London and Shiocton. We Energies crews must replace each of these meters so that service can be safely restored to the corresponding customers.
After natural gas service is turned on at the meter, technicians will visit each customer to relight pilot lights on natural gas appliances and make sure they are working safely. Customers should not try to relight pilot lights themselves.
How customers can help We Energies restore service as soon as possible
To complete the reconnection process, We Energies crews will need access to a customer’s home or business. Anyone over the age of 18 who is present can provide access. If a customer is not available, crews will leave a card with instructions on contacting We Energies to have service restored as soon as possible.
