APPLETON, WI (WTAQ) – A Fox Valley nonprofit has received a Lowe’s Hometown Grant to help finish critical upgrades and expand their facility.
Harbor House, an agency committed to the awareness and prevention of domestic abuse and sexual assault, is one of 100 recipients nationally to receive a Lowe’s Hometown Grant. The grant will help finish critical upgrades and expand their facility in Appleton.
“What it really means for us here at Harbor House is that we will have a dedicated space for victims of sexual violence, where they can come and get healing and support,” said Executive Director Amber Schroeder. “We’ll have a dedicated community room and a support group area, as well as their own private entrance. This is really important to help give that sense of security and safety, as well as to maintain anonymity.”
Those private spaces will also be used for victims to meet with law enforcement, medical supports and community partners.
“What it means is helping people who have had their voice taken from them, either through domestic or sexual violence, reclaim their sense of self and security,” Schroeder told WTAQ News. “Healing is different for every person, and we are here to support folks as they navigate their journey.”
The project will also transform an existing space into a boutique where all clients can shop for clothes and personal items at no charge. Often clients are fleeing dangerous situations and in some cases, personal belongings are left behind or may become evidence.
Work on each of these projects will take place between July and November of this year. Volunteers from Lowe’s and Appleton-based Dixon Ticonderoga Company (formerly Pacon Corporation), will help complete the projects.
“Most of it is inside the building if you won’t be able so see it all from the street, but little by little, you’ll start seeing it here. We’ll have a finished late this fall [in November],” Schroeder said.
