(UW ATHLETICS) MADISON – Wisconsin women’s soccer earned a 5-1 victory over UIC on Sunday afternoon at McClimon Soccer Complex. The last time they scored five goals in a non-conference game was in 2021 against Eastern Illinios.
How it Happened
Wisconsin wasted little time getting on the board, striking in the fifth minute. Jane Rogers found the back of the net to give Wisconsin an early 1-0 advantage. Anya Gulbrandsen and Izy Truab were credited with assists on Rogers’ first goal of the season.
The Badgers continued to create opportunities throughout the opening half, but UIC found an equalizer late. Grace Lisota scored an unassisted goal in the 41st minute to even the match at 1-1.
Wisconsin responded almost immediately. Just after UIC’s equalizer, Abby Ballek restored the Badgers’ advantage in the 43rd minute. Erin Connolly picked up the assist as Ballek scored her first goal of the season and her career, sending Wisconsin into halftime with a 2-1 lead.
The Badgers carried that momentum into the second half and needed less than three minutes to add to their lead. In the 47th minute Jenna Baumann scored her first goal of the season off an assist from Truab, extending Wisconsin’s advantage to 3-1.
Baumann wasn’t finished. Less than six minutes later, the junior struck again for her second goal of the afternoon. Rogers and Megan Cornell combined for the assists on the 54th-minute goal, giving Baumann her brace and putting Wisconsin ahead 4-1.
Wisconsin’s scoring continued in the 60th minute. Margaret Sisk entered the match in the 59th minute and quickly made an impact, scoring thirty seconds later off assists from Delaney Cox and KK Panella. Sisk’s first goal of the season pushed the Badgers’ lead to 5-1 and capped a stretch of three Wisconsin goals in less than 12 minutes to open the second half.
The Badgers held UIC scoreless the rest of the way to secure the 5-1 victory. Wisconsin finished with a 14-9 advantage in shots, 7-3 edge in shots on goal and 10-4 advantage in corner kicks.
