GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) — A Green Bay author is using his book to bridge cultural divides and address a need in the community.
Rudy Hernandez, the author of La Leyenda de la Momia del Ojo Verde, or The Legend of the Green-Eyed Mummy, says the children’s book was inspired by a joke from about 10 years ago.
“I would tell this story and I would get a very good reaction, but then the joke didn’t last too long,” said Hernandez. “So I started adding my own characters and storylines until we had the story that we have today.”
Hernandez says it took about two years to write the book. What started out as a bucket-list goal of writing a book became something bigger.
“A lot of local places are short in bilingual and Spanish literature. This book has become a beginning for a movement to raise awareness to bring more bilingual and Spanish literature to the community. Even some of the Spanish material that there is, isn’t translated properly. I spoke to [Spanish-speaking] families when I was promoting the book, and they said they had to order books from another country because there was nothing here in the community,” said Hernandez.
The text of the story is presented in both English and Spanish. Hernandez says the side-by-side English and Spanish text invites those who speak English a window into the Spanish world, while also offering those who speak Spanish an opportunity to strengthen their English skills.
