GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – Two area counties are categorized in the “high” level for disease case activity, one of those in the Fox Valley.
Outagamie and Manitowoc counties are seeing “high” disease activity levels for COVID-19, and it’s growing. Dr. Ashok Rai with Prevea Health tells FOX 11 whether it’s a high or medium disease activity– the state of COVID in Wisconsin is still not great.
“I think all of our surrounding counties are on the edge between medium and high at all points. It just takes a couple points, a couple percentage points to move in that. I wouldn’t say Outagamie is worse than Brown or Manitowoc, I would say we’re hovering in an uncomfortable position.”
According to the Wisconsin Department of Health Services, the seven-day average of new confirmed cases has increased 160% in the last two weeks. It now stands at 156 new cases per day.
“As far as COVID goes, it’s definitely not gone. We’re seeing a slight uptick. Not as bad as other parts of the country or parts of the world right now but we are definitely going in the wrong direction,” said Dr. Rai.
Dr. Rai worries that this slight uptick will turn into situations we saw last fall, when the state saw its highest number of COVID-19 cases.
“We know when the curve starts to point up it’s not a slow incline normally it actually speeds up. Right now we’re lucky it’s summer time and most of the gatherings are happening outside but come end of August, early September, it’s extremely concerning.”
He says the most effective way to avoid the situation is getting more people vaccinated. Currently, Outagamie County in the Fox Valley has large areas where the population’s vaccination rate ranges between 0 to 40%.
