GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – A man who threw a tear gas cannister back at police during a violent protest was sentenced Thursday to 15 days in jail.
Dakota Vandertie, 27, pleaded no contest to misdemeanor counts of obstructing an officer, disorderly conduct, and possession of drug paraphernalia. A count of unlawful assembly was dismissed.
Vandertie was also placed probation for 18 months, ordered to perform 50 hours of community service, and must write a letter of apology to the officers, Judge John Zakowski ordered.
Vandertie was identified in video taken during the May 31 protests in Green Bay. He told police he got caught up in the protest, but did not intend to throw the canister specifically at officers.
Crowds had been protesting the George Floyd death, when the scene turned violent. A convenience store was looted, plus multiple businesses and squad cars were damaged.
