GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) — The Pride flag is now waving high at Green Bay City Hall as the mayor recognizes Pride month in the city.
On Thursday, Mayor Eric Genrich read the official proclamation declaring Pride month in Green Bay, and rose the Pride flag outside of City Hall.
While addressing those in attendance, he said the vast majority of people in Green Bay and across the U.S. are supportive of LGBTQ+ rights; and it’s important for him to be representative of the people.
“There are a lot of policies that are being entertained across the country, and are sometimes enacted, that are targeting the [LGBTQ+] community,” said Mayor Genrich. “So it’s really important for me as the leader of Green Bay to stand with that community.”
Not everybody was supportive of having the Pride flag flown; Mayor Genrich noted that there were two attempts to ban the Pride flag from City Hall. Mayor Genrich voted against both of those efforts and broke the tie among city council members.
Community members, like Nicole Kurth, say raising the Pride flag is important.
“It’s important to have these events because there’s still people out there who don’t know that their lives are worth living, because so many of us are not always accepted in all spaces we go to,” said Kurth.
