(WTAQ-WLUK) — While President Biden spent his day focused on international affairs, Wisconsin leaders focused on issues at home, specifically immigration policy.
Republicans like Senator Ron Johnson demand he return to the country to see what’s happening at the U.S. – Mexico border.
Senator Ron Johnson and other Republicans toured the border Friday afternoon.
They’re calling out the Biden Administration as a growing number of people crowd the southern border.
GOP leaders citing instances like this:
“In my hearings, I’ve heard of children being sold for $84,”said Johnson. “How do you think the young women pay off their five, six, seven, $8,000 human trafficking fee? I think we all know.”
The Trump-era ‘Remain in Mexico’ policy is one of the laws at the center of immigration policy debate.
It requires asylum seekers to wait in Mexico for U.S. immigration hearings.
The Supreme Court ruled the Biden administration can do away with the policy.
President Joe Biden had reinstated the policy under a previous court order in December.
“With an issue like this it has to be an all of the above response,” said Democratic Senator Tammy Baldwin offering this, on how Senate Democrats are addressing the issue. “Investments in smart border security but also resources so that cases of asylum can be much more quickly brought to immigration courts,” she said.
Last week, Texas’ governor authorized the state’s national guard, and the Department of Public Safety, to arrest migrants at the border.
But there are other pressing issues for voters ahead of November’s midterm elections.
Several polls show debates over the economy, abortion access and gun reform are more likely to top the priority list.
