Depleted by injury, the Milwaukee Brewers keep finding ways to come from behind for victories, earning a taut 2-1 win in the rubber game against the Padres in San Diego Wednesday afternoon. Aaron Ashby got the start for Freddy Peralta who is on the injured list and covered 5 and two thirds innings, allowing four hits and one, unearned run to go along with three walks and five strikeouts. The young lefthander worked out of a third inning jam when he walked a pair. The Padres got on the board thanks to a Jace Peterson error at third base that kept the 5th inning alive. Jurickson Profar brought in the run on a ground out.
The Brewers rallied for a pair in the top of the 7th to take the lead as Rowdy Tellez drove in his 33rd run of the year with an RBI single. Tyrone Taylor plated the go ahead run with a sacrifice fly.
The bullpen did the rest of the work. Luis Perdomo recorded four outs to get Milwaukee to the 8th inning where Brad Boxberger struck out the side for his 9th hold of the year. Devin Williams came on for the ninth, the first time in his career he’s been called out of the pen for three straight days and retired the Padres in order for his 4th save of the year, taking over the closer role with Josh Hader still away on a family matter.
Willy Adames and Hunter Renfro remain on the injured list keeping a couple of strong bats out of the lineup but Milwaukee found another way to win with only four hits.
The Brewers are now 28-16 on the year and increase their lead to three and a half games over the idle St. Louis Cardinals but Busch Stadium is where they’re headed next to open up an important four game series. Eric Lauer (4-1) will go up against Adam Wainwright (5-3) in the series opener Thursday night.
