GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) – Starting on Tuesday – staff, students, and parents in Green Bay will receive a survey.
“The survey is really looking at peoples perceptions and thoughts related to the topic or pieces around that diversity, inclusion, and belonging,” said Katie Sulzer, the district’s director of pupil services and equity coordinator.
The survey will ask broad questions including whether teachers want students at different ability levels to collaborate, or whether students like working with other students from different backgrounds.
“We’re going to take that and couple it with district data from the last few years. From that, we’re going to create an equity dashboard,” Sulzer told WTAQ News. “[A] taskforce would look at the data and then make recommendations as to goals and strategies to get there, as well as a system to monitor that so that we do what we say we’re going to do.”
The goal is to create a plan to address inequities across the district as a whole.
“We haven’t had an overall plan to address the inequities that lie within our district as it relates to achievement, suspension rates, graduation rates,” Sulzer explained. “Looking at the achievement of some of our kids, you can tell there’s definitely some disparities there among groups. And we’re really diving into looking at some of the racial disparities, as well as our data around students with disabilities.”
Multiple other districts have similar plans in place. District officials worked with Kenosha schools, who are working on a similar three-year plan. Madison is also working on a plan.
“It’s a way to systematically change how we include all of our students and how we look at our data from a different lens,” Sulzer said.
The survey will be sent to staff, along with parents and students in grades 6-12. It will run April 13-April 27th. Sulzer says it will likely be at least another year before the plan is completely developed.
