(DNR) – High water levels on the Wolf River are still too dangerous for the DNR to monitor the status of the lake sturgeon spawn at sites within the drainage. These high water levels are also causing areas outside of the river to flood, allowing some sturgeon to utilize passages that are usually unavailable. The Winnebago Sturgeon Team is aware that there are sturgeon in new locations along the Wolf River and other areas of the Wolf River drainage due to these high waters.
With the evacuation order in Shiocton and New London, the DNR will assess the situation as soon as conditions allow.
At this time, sturgeon have plenty of water and will likely return on their own to the Wolf River. With water levels still projected to rise throughout the weekend, the path that the sturgeon took to get to these new locations will likely still be available to them. If the DNR moved sturgeon at this time, there is a high likelihood they would just return to the same area again due to the high water.
Updates will be made on our Sturgeon Spawning webpage as changes occur.
