(GREEN BAY ATHLETICS) GREEN BAY – The Green Bay women’s soccer team had the offense clicking Thursday night, taking down the Robert Morris Colonials at home by a score of 3-1. The Phoenix picked up three points and moved into second place in the Horizon League standings with 16 points on the year.
The win was the team’s tenth of the year, moving GB to 10-1-3 overall and 5-1-1 in Horizon League play.
“What a professional second half performance tonight,” said head coach Matt Kagan. “We scored twice in three minutes and then really closed the door on the game. Such a great team win tonight in every way!”
HOW IT HAPPENED
Green Bay got the scoring started early, when Ava Nielsen found Bella Brozek for an eighth-minute goal. Nielsen played a beautiful through ball to the feet of Brozek, who split the keeper’s legs for her second goal of the season. RMU had limited opportunities to respond but did so in the 42nd minute when Ivy Chaskelson tied it up at one all right before the half.
The Phoenix put the pressure on in the second half and found their breakthrough goal after a long boot from Anna Scott flicked off the head of Grace Downey before a Colonials defender attempted to play it back to her own goal. Unfortunately for the visitors, Laney Stark pounced on the pass and rounded the keeper before putting home her fifth goal of the season to make it 2-1 in the 63rd minute. Not even two minutes later, the Phoenix made it 3-1 when an Aixa Helbringer-Escobar corner found Rebecca Stoeckmann, who scored her second goal in as many games to make it 3-1.
