(GREEN BAY ATHLETICS) GREEN BAY – The Green Bay men’s soccer team picked up their first victory of the season in a 2-1 win over Western Illinois on Saturday at Aldo Santaga Stadium.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Phoenix and Leathernecks remained scoreless through the first half, before Nathan Moua broke the scoreless tie with a goal in the 53rd minute, assisted by James Dorchester. Moua created space for himself in the box before his shot deflected off a Leathernecks defender and found the back of the net.
The Leathernecks found the equalizer in the 65th minute in the form of a goal from Ryan Wrobleski, off an assist from Ty Duax, to bring the score to 1-1.
The score ultimately stood for less than 30 seconds as the Phoenix retook the lead in the 65th minute when Dylan Drendel found Luke Nicholson on a fast break to strike back, putting the Phoenix in front to 2-1. Drendel received the ball on the left side of the Phoenix attack before squaring to Nicholson, who slotted it past the Western Illinois keeper.
Western Illinois fired four shots in the final 1:10 of the game, including an on-target bicycle kick from Xavier Gagnon, but Drew Swancutt was there for the save, guiding Green Bay to its first win of the season.
