MENASHA, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — Eight days after a tornado heavily damaged parts of the city — including an elementary school and the high school football stadium — Menasha school officials are providing an update.
In a news conference, Superintendent Dan Slowey said all students will begin the school year on Monday, August 31 as scheduled. However, there’s a shakeup for Gegan Elementary students.
“Due to the extensive damage, we will not be beginning the school year in that building,” said Superintendent Dan Slowey. “But every student will have a place to go in our district to get a great education. We are exploring every option and ensure a great year for those kids.”
Slowey said the district hopes to make decisions on what spaces will be used early next week. He added the district has been exploring other options in the community.
Slowey said, except for Gegan Elementary School, assessments have been completed for all district buildings, which reopened Tuesday.
The news conference comes after Gegan Elementary School was heavily damaged in the July 27 storm. Damage included smashed windows and holes in the roof.
Nathan Calder Stadium had a section of bleachers torn off and a light standard bent down, among other damage.
Menasha is scheduled to begin its football season at home Aug. 21 against Plymouth.
Classes are scheduled to begin at all Menasha public schools on Aug. 31.
