LIBERTY GROVE, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — Two people escaped with minor injuries after an ultralight aircraft crashed while attempting an emergency landing Sunday evening in Door County.
The Door County Sheriff’s Office says deputies were called around 7:41 p.m. to the area of 9956 Eagle Lane in the Town of Liberty Grove after receiving a report of an ultralight aircraft crash. Responding deputies found the aircraft upside down in a field with two occupants inside.
According to the sheriff’s office, the aircraft had departed from Ephraim-Gibraltar Airport for a planned one-hour flight and was returning to the airport when it apparently experienced an engine failure. Investigators say the pilot was forced to make an emergency landing in an open field, and the aircraft overturned during the landing.
Both people on board suffered minor cuts and scrapes but declined transportation to a hospital. The Sister Bay Fire Department, Sister Bay/Liberty Grove Emergency Medical Responders, Door County Emergency Services and the Door County Sheriff’s Office all responded to the scene.
The crash remains under investigation by the Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board. The sheriff’s office says no additional information is being released at this time.
