(WTAQ-WLUK) — A new bill introduced by Wisconsin Democrats on Monday is looking to legalize both recreational and medical marijuana in the state.
The legislation would make recreational cannabis legal for adults 21 and older, along with legalizing medical marijuana for those 18 and older or minors with parental consent. The proposal would also create state regulations for producing, testing, packaging and selling marijuana, including a sales tax option for municipalities.
“Wisconsin is surrounded by states that have legalized cannabis,” said Representative Amaad Rivera-Wagner, D-Green Bay, “We can keep exporting revenue and opportunity, or we can finally support what the vast majority of Wisconsinites want and do this the right way here at home.”
With Republicans controlling the Assembly and state Senate, the latest proposal by Democrats could face opposition.
Wisconsin GOP lawmakers previously introduced legislation to legalize medical marijuana in September of 2025, which is still being debated in Madison.
Forty states and Washington, D.C. have legalized marijuana in some form, including states neighboring Wisconsin such as Illinois, Michigan and Minnesota.
