(MARQUETTE COMMUNICATIONS) WASHINGTON, D.C. – An hour from her hometown, Lee Volker returned to the DMV to propel Marquette (15-7, 9-4 BIG EAST) to a 67-59 win over Georgetown (12-10, 5-8 BIG EAST) on Sunday evening at McDonough Arena. The grad student finished with 22 points, two shy of her career high.
After allowing the first 19 points in the first meeting, it took Marquette just 65 seconds to get on the scoreboard behind a triple from Volker who looked to set the tone early. The guard poured in 10 of the Golden Eagles’ first 16 points as they led by eight after one.
A 7-0 stretch midway through the second for MU saw the Golden Eagles extend its advantage to 26-12 but Georgetown answered back. Over the last 4:07, the Hoyas outscored Marquette 15-5, cutting MU’s halftime lead down to 31-27.
GU came out of the half on the front font, closing to within one four minutes in. Jaidynn Mason put a stop to the Hoyas’ momentum with seven straight, including an and-one, to ignite a 17-2 run that created some distance on the scoreboard. A foul on a 3-pointer late in the period brought the Golden Eagles’ lead back down to 13 at 52-39.
