GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) — The Green Bay Police Department is in the process of analyzing crime data from 2025.
Police Chief Chris Davis says putting it all together is a lot more complicated than it may seem.
“There’s all of our internal review, and then we send it to the state and they look at it,” said Chief Davis. “It’s complicated also by the fact that something could be considered one type of crime initially, and then we investigate further and realize it was actually something else.”
Although formal numbers are not out yet, Chief Davis says 2025 saw a decrease of persons crime, property crime, and overdoses compared to 2024.
Persons crime can include murder, assault, rape, domestic violence, etc. Chief Davis says those decreased numbers were similar across the board for the different types of persons crime; no single type of persons crime drove those decreasing numbers any more than the other.
A significant reduction in auto thefts is what lead to the decrease in property crimes; 272 auto thefts were reported in 2024 compared to 198 (according to preliminary numbers) in 2025. Chief Davis says that can be attributed to efforts on the law enforcement side for holding people accountable, and on the prevention side by providing steering wheel locks to people who have vehicles more susceptible to theft and educating the community on effective ways to prevent theft.
In terms of overdose decreases, Chief Davis speculates that could be because of a decreased supply of fentanyl, and a decreased potency in fentanyl in addition to education and awareness efforts.
Looking forward to 2026, Chief Davis says he wants to continue to work towards decreased overdoses, gun crimes, domestic violence and overall persons crimes.
The final data from 2025 is expected to be ready in 6-8 weeks.
