GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — A decision has not been made on whether the teen who allegedly brought a gun to Preble High School will be prosecuted in juvenile or adult court.
The 16-year-old is currently charged in juvenile court, but prosecutors have requested the case be moved to adult court.
In court Monday, the attorneys said negotiations continue about the terms of the waiver, so another court hearing was scheduled.
Meanwhile, the boy will remain in a secure juvenile facility, Judge Beau Liegeois said Monday.
“The factual allegations in the case with an actual firearm being located on school premises, that’s obviously a very significant big deal. The places where there are that many children around are very dangerous places for firearms to be present and some of the most significant tragedies in the history of our country have taken place in the last 30 years in this context,” the judge said.
While juvenile court proceedings are closed to the public, there is an exception to allow the media to cover such hearings, with the condition the juvenile not be identified.
The loaded gun and ammunition were found at Preble on Sept. 9, after a fight. The items were located by a police officer in a backpack in a locked classroom.
The incident prompted the Green Bay Area Public School District to require clear backpacks for middle and high school students. The district also enacted what it called “enhanced safety protocols” after the incident.
