OCONTO FALLS, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — Students and educators in Oconto Falls are excited to begin a new school year in a new school.
A ribbon cutting ceremony was held Monday to celebrate the doors opening at the new Oconto Falls Middle School, located at 330 S. County Road I.
Officials say the state-of-the-art facility was designed to support innovative learning, student well-being and future-ready education. It features larger rooms, upgraded technology and transformative educational spaces.
“We have a lot of great things going on at our middle school, so it’s great to have the facilities that match that instruction. It’s great for our kids to be able to have the space to be able to do more collaboration,” said Stuart Russ, superintendent of Oconto Falls Public Schools.
From putting a referendum on the ballot to getting through construction, it’s a process that has been years in the making.
“There was definitely a lot of need that they identified prior to going to a referendum, just to try to repair Washington Middle School. It was determined at that time that it was the best course of action to build new, because the amount that it would take for it, compared to something new — this just made more sense to do something new,” said Russ.
He believes the new middle school is a giant step up from WMS. Some sections of that school are 40 to 50 years old, while other parts of the building were constructed more than a century ago.
“It’s great to see the smiles on people’s faces and I know that people have really been ready to get inside and check this place out,” Russ said.
