GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — Green Bay is looking for input from its residents on how federal funds can create affordable housing opportunities over the next five years.
The city is developing a strategy and action plan that will guide how federal community development dollars are spent.
These plans will determine how millions in federal Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) and HOME Investment Partnership funds are used to help low- and moderate-income families find decent, affordable housing and improve their neighborhoods.
Green Bay faces significant housing challenges. The city needs between 3,314 and 7,441 new rental units by 2040 to keep up with demand. Currently, there’s a shortage of 3,715 affordable rental units for the lowest-income residents. With home prices rising 14% in the past year to a median of $285,000, many working families are being priced out.
Green Bay has been working to address these challenges through various programs. The Green Bay Housing Authority provides affordable housing where tenants pay just 30% of their income for rent. NeighborWorks Green Bay has helped create or renovate 466 homes and apartments. The city recently received nearly $2 million in federal HOME-ARP funding to create new affordable rental units and provide supportive services specifically for homeless individuals and families.
The Redevelopment Authority of the city will hold a public hearing on Thursday, July 3, 2025, at 5:30 p.m. This meeting will take place both in-person in Room 604 of City Hall (100 N Jefferson Street) and virtually via Zoom.
