BROWN COUNTY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – Brown County will likely ask the federal government to change the scope of a grant related to redevelopment of the port, and the possible move of the coal piles.
The county has been working with the C. Reiss Company to move the coal piles, currently located on the west bank of the Fox River just south of Mason Street – to former Pulliam Power Plant site at the mouth of the river. No deal has been struck.
As part of the process, the county received a “Port Infrastructure Development Program” grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation for $10 million, with the county contributing $20 million.
Since then, the cost of the project has increased from $30 million to more than $50 million. Now, the county wants to change the scope of the project to a $25 million one, but needs the federal government to approve the change.
On Monday, the Harbor Commission voted to ask for the change.
Another County Board committee has already endorsed the idea, sending the matter to the full County Board, according to Port Director Dean Haen. The County Board meets next May 21.
