BELLEVUE, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — The Greater Green Bay Habitat for Humanity ReStore gave members of the public an opportunity to bring the NFL Draft’s green room into their own homes.
Lowe’s donated a large quantity of the draft green room furniture to Habitat, and the nonprofit put the donation to good use.
“This is a surplus from items that were offered to our future homebuyers for Habitat Homestead, which was a direction from the NFL and Lowe’s,” said Jessica Diederich, CEO of the Greater Green Bay Habitat for Humanity. “They wanted to help give them a head start help decorating their new houses and then any of the surplus, we are able to sell in our ReStore.”
Some shoppers knew the significance of the end tables, coffee tables, lamps and rugs that were on sale.
“I heard about it through one of my friends, but I didn’t know they would be bringing it here,” said Ted Willette of Green Bay. “I thought it would be going to houses, but they’re doing a dual thing, so now I have to buy a lamp.”
Shoppers like Kristin Honold simply bought a souvenir for functional reasons, with a side of sentimental.
“I have a lamp that I hate, so I’m just replacing it, that’s all. It’s nothing special, I didn’t even get to go to the draft. I was in Kauai,” she said. “Tough life, I know, but I guess technically, my husband would have been very proud. He passed away and he would have been at the draft, so this is going to be my way, a little piece of the draft in my house.”
The donation and sale of the furniture it truly a win-win. Not only do people get to go home with a piece of NFL Draft history, but Habitat for Humanity will also reinvest its proceeds into projects such as Habitat Homestead.
“We hope to use the funds from that to be able to pour into the materials that we’re purchasing for the Habitat Homestead homes,” Diederich said. “Coming and buying a piece of history and having that in your living room, you’re also helping to build homes in the community and supporting local families.”
And it’s something to talk about when someone compliments or asks about that special piece of furniture.
