Brion Hatcher (Wisconsin DOC)
GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – Brion Hatcher’s appeal for a 2019 murder in Green Bay was denied Tuesday by the state Court of Appeals.
Hatcher, 38, was convicted of first-degree intentional homicide for the Jan. 27, 2019, murder of Tavarious Edwards at a home on George Street. Hatcher, who is also identified as “Brian” in some records, was sentenced to life in prison but is eligible to ask for parole in 2051.
He appealed on several grounds, including that his right to a speedy trial was violated, as his trial didn’t happen until May 2021. But in a 29-page decision, the court rejected his arguments.
“In all, none of the six delays in this case were the result of the State deliberately attempting to delay the trial in order to hamper the defense. In fact, none of the delays can be attributed to the State under binding precedent. Conversely, Hatcher was responsible for at least two of the delays. Thus, the delays in this case weigh in favor of a conclusion that Hatcher’s right to a speedy trial right was not violated,” the decision states.
Hatcher is currently housed at the Columbia Correctional Institution, state records show.
According to the criminal complaint, witnesses told authorities Hatcher believed Edwards stole $1,000 from him. However, when speaking with police, Hatcher denied having any problem with Edwards or involvement in his murder. Edwards died from a gunshot wound in the neck.
