APPLETON, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — The Appleton Fire Department is remembering the life and legacy of their former captain in the wake of his death.
According to an obituary, Mike “Woody” Woodzicka died unexpectedly Jan. 20 at the age of 57. His career with the Appleton Fire Department spanned more than three decades.
Woodzicka was hired in 1989 as a firefighter. In the years to come, he held several other positions, including driver/engineer and lieutenant, before retiring as the department’s captain in Jan. 2022.
“Throughout his career, he exemplified courage and commitment, earning multiple Lifesaving Awards for his heroic actions, including rescues that saved lives,” the Appleton Fire Department wrote in a Facebook tribute.
Woodzicka’s leadership extended beyond the firehouse; he was also a dedicated union advocate. As part of Appleton Local 257, Woodzicka “tirelessly worked to improve the lives of firefighters locally and statewide.”
From 1993 to 2017, Woodzicka served in numerous union leadership roles — trustee, vice president, president and chair of the bargaining committee.
Known for his strength, quick wit, and dedication to mentorship, Captain Woodzicka was a beloved figure who inspired countless firefighters. He was not only a firefighter and a union leader but also a father, brother, mentor, and friend.
AFD concluded their Facebook post saying, “Rest in peace, Captain Woodzicka. Your legacy will never be forgotten.”
