(WTAQ-WLUK) — Northeast Wisconsin has been experiencing severely cold conditions for the past several days, and although things are still frigid as of Tuesday night, we’ll soon be climbing our way to milder temperatures.
Cold Weather Advisories are in place until midnight Wednesday. We will fall to -5 degrees Tuesday evening, then start climbing back to +6 by sunrise.
This extreme cold has homeless shelters working on overdrive.
“It is very cold just coming in for people that have homes or cars; it is an inconvenience when it is this cold. When you are without a home, and you’re forced to be outside, it could be deadly — and that is what we are trying to avoid here,” said Jesse Brunette, executive director at St. John’s Ministries.
With wind chills sitting between -40 and -20 degrees, experts say frostbite can occur in just 10 to 20 minutes.
On Monday night, St. John’s Ministries shelters in Green Bay — which is in their 19th season — hit a record number of people.
“Last night we sheltered 110 men and 50 women between the two shelters. 160 people. Surpassed a record high that we have experienced just a few times a couple weeks ago,” Brunette said.
A number of organizations in Green Bay have opened warming shelters because of these extremely cold temperatures.
- St. John’s Ministries has a warming shelter at its Micah Center. It’s open 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The men’s and women’s shelter locations are available from 5 p.m. to 8:30 a.m.
- NEW Community Shelter is open 24 hours a day.
- The Salvation Army of Greater Green Bay is open from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
- Earnest of Inheritance Church is open Monday through Saturday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
