GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — A downtown display of Green Bay Packers history is being removed.
Crews are working to remove elements of the Packers Heritage Plaza on the corner of Washington and Cherry streets to make way for an eight-story apartment building.
The Packers Heritage Plaza features the statues of Paul Hornung, Johnny “Blood” (McNally), Bart Starr and team co-founder George Whitney Calhoun, among others. The Plaza also includes a large recognition wall and green space enhancements. It opened in 2013.
Last month, Green Bay’s Redevelopment Authority approved spending $109,701 to move the monument to an undetermined location.
Packers Heritage, Inc., sued, seeking to keep the display in its current location but the team later relented, and agreed to move the display.
The 268-unit luxury apartment building will take close to two years to complete.
