KEWAUNEE CO, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — The body of an ice fisherman was recovered from the Kewaunee River Monday morning.
Just before 5:30 a.m. Monday, the Kewaunee County Sheriff’s Department received a call for a welfare check for 65 year old Kewaunee man. The caller stated that his brother, David J. Mastalir, had gone fishing Sunday and had not returned home.
Officials found Mastalir’s vehicle and fishing equipment near the Kewaunee River, about a mile west of the city of Kewaunee.
Units from Kewaunee County Sheriff’s Department, the Kewaunee Fire Department, Luxemburg Fire Department, Door County Dive Team and the Department of Natural Resources, searched the area.
Mastalir’s body was recovered by dive team members at 10:04 a.m.
Sheriff Matt Joski called the situation a terrible tragedy. He said it appears Mastalir was standing on what they call ‘shelf ice’ formed along the shore and fell through and into the water.
Joski urges anglers itching to start ice fishing to hold off a little bit longer as the ice is unpredictable right now.
