KAUKAUNA, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — An incoming college freshman is the first recipient of a new scholarship that encourages women to explore careers in the paper and forest products industry.
The Wisconsin Paper Council and Ahlstrom awarded $1,000 to Carissa Ashman as part of the Women in Forest Products Scholarship Fund.
She will attend UW-Green Bay, majoring in Environmental Engineering.
She said ever since she was little, she was interested in preserving nature. Later on in life, she was introduced to the engineering field.
“Since engineering is a male dominated field and that’s supposed to be a male’s job, I like seeing females going into the industry, just seeing it become more diverse, just opening the opportunities for all and being a first-time recipient of this scholarship, it makes me very proud and honored to be the first to help all women that come after me and help them also achieve their dreams that are similar to mine and being able to accomplish whatever they would like to be,” Ashman said.
She says the scholarship will help her reach her career goals.
“I think it’s very important because whether someone wants to go to school or not, money may be like the biggest factor in going or not so for me that was also what I was kind of deciding like money wasn’t always the easiest for us so receiving scholarships made it a lot easier and took a lot of the stress off and it’s just making it easier,” she said.
Ashman comes from a family of papermakers. Her grandparents worked at a papermill for 40 years.
