GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — The school calendar year looks a bit different this year for Green Bay and Ashwaubenon districts.
Historically, public school in Wisconsin started up after Labor Day.
Concerned about students’ safety, Green Bay Area and Ashwaubenon Public School District decided it would be best to close schools during the 2025 NFL Draft.
Bayer says they have gotten great feedback from the community about the early start.
“Maybe this is the way we move going forward… it’s been really positive,” Interim Superintendent Vicki Bayer says.
School district director of communications Lori Blakeslee says having off of school will promote safety, and allow students and parents to get involved in this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.
The districts submitted a waiver to the state’s Department of Public Instruction in November 2023. State law is public schools can’t begin before September 1.
However, asynchronous instruction will happen for 7th, 8th, 10th, 11th, and 12th grades on Monday. They will head back to class Tuesday.
However, students who attend N.E.W. School of Innovation, John Dewey Academy of Learning, Head Start or KJ Academy follow a different calendar.
Green Bay Area Public School Districts 2024-2025 theme is “Together We Are One”.
The Southwest High School’s choir director, Brandon Rockstroh, wrote a song to follow the theme last spring.
Current and former students lent their talent and time to bring the song to life.
“Mr. Rockstroh over at Southwest wrote the song for us and he gathered students together this summer and they recorded it, and it’s out there now on our Facebook page and our website. It’s a really good way to kick off the school year,” says Bayer.
