TOWN OF CLAY BANKS, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — Four weeks after it was split in two during a damaging storm, an intersection in Door County is once again open to traffic.
It was back at the end of June when a line of intense thunderstorms moved through Northeast Wisconsin overnight, toppling trees and power lines and washing out roads.
Residents in Door County woke up June 25 to find the intersection of Rosewood Road and Shiloh Road on County Highway U had been split in half.
The Door County Highway Department (DCHD) said the gaping hole was about 20 feet wide and 12 feet deep. The six-foot-wide culvert failed under intense water pressure.
“Over the night they got five inches-plus of rain and everything washed out,” said Rob Robison of the DCHD. “With that, the culvert couldn’t handle the water and it started washing out the road around it.”
On Thursday, the DCHD announced the roadway has been repaired and cleared for use.
The Highway Department Crews have excavated the area, installed over 200 feet of culvert pipe and filled in the surrounding area to support the new roadway. The road is currently gravel and will need to settle for about a month before the department can begin to pave it.
Because the roadway is still gravel, motorists are asked to reduce their speed and use caution while driving through the area.
