KEWAUNEE, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — Authorities say there is a fake post regarding a missing Kewaunee child making the rounds on social media.
The fake post urges the public to share the post about a missing Brandan Cooper with autism.
Kewaunee County deputies say this post is a scam and confirm there is no missing child in their jurisdiction.
Officials say these types of posts can appear on rummage sale or resale pages.
Ways to determine if a post is a scam:
- They do not include any information for the public nor do they provide and email or contact information for the responsible agency.
- The profile of the person who created the post most times include nothing but a single photograph or post and were created very recently. Do not friend this person or provide any avenue for them to contact you.
- Check the law enforcement Facebook Pages where pertinent information and press releases are often found. Something of this nature would have likely been posted in a press release.
- Check local news outlets for information and press releases as these are often sent directly to them.
- If the comments on the post are turned off to prevent users from warning others.
- Use good judgement. If it looks to be fake it likely is.
If you have a concern regarding posts of this nature, contact your local law enforcement agency directly.
