Brown County
(WTAQ-WLUK) — Brown County officials are urging residents not to fall for a scam that demands payment for missing jury duty.
The Brown County Clerk of Court’s Office says the imposters claim that records show the jurors failed to appear for jury duty and now must either turn themselves in to the Brown County Sheriff’s Office for arrest or send payment through a gift card. These imposters are very convincing and create a false sense of urgency to follow their instructions.
Some jurors were texted fake bench warrant documents and others were mailed false payment notices with instructions on where to send the gift card information to.
“There is no situation where it would be necessary for jurors to send cash, gift cards, or Bitcoin for missing jury service,” says John A. Vander Leest, Brown County Clerk of Courts. “These are complete scams, and I urge you to not fall for it. Please talk to your family members about this scam so they don’t fall victim to it. I’ve had multiple calls from victims who have paid $500 or more to the scammers.”
If you have been affected by this scam, call your local police department.
