GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – A consultant for the Green Bay Area Public School District outlined $178 million in projects which could be included in a November referendum to pay for elementary school maintenance, remodeling, and replacement.
The district is going through a process to cope with declining enrollment, including closing schools, redrawing attendance boundaries, and construction to accommodate those changes.
On Monday, the School Board voted to close MacArthur, Langlade, and Elmore elementary schools. The district says the closures will happen no sooner than the 2026-27 school year. Those will join three others which closed this spring: Tank, Keller, and Wequiock.
The report highlights several goals of the projects, including having separate gyms & cafeterias; a sufficient number of adequately-sized classrooms; breakout & small group spaces; community, mental health & before-after school care spaces; and improved parent dropoff/pickup. The report details the costs associated with each project, but has not made a recommendation of what a referendum should include.
A referendum could include some or all of these, as well as other projects not listed, according to the district.
The single-largest item in the project would be $60 million for a new Kennedy Elementary, which would also serve the students currently there, as well as those currently at MacArthur and Keller.
Seven other elementary schools are included in the proposal. Some of the money would be deferred maintenance, while some would be remodeling and additions to accommodate the new boundaries. The totals for each of those schools are:
- Beaumont: $12.6 million
- Chappell: $15.5 million
- Doty: $26.2 million
- Lincoln: $11.9 million
- Nicolet: $9.6 million
- Sullivan: $15.4 million
- Webster: $11 million
The consultant’s report does not cite any figures for possible impact on the tax levy.
The full plan will be presented to the school board July 8.
If scheduled, the referendum would be held Nov. 5.
