APPLETON, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — Vehicle owners in Appleton will pay more at registration beginning next year.
At its meeting Wednesday night, the city council approved raising the wheel tax from $20 to $30. The vote was 8-7.
The city collected more than $1.2 million from the tax in 2023. The increase is expected to add another $645,000 in revenue. The city uses the money for road maintenance.
Appleton instituted the fee in 2014, and it has not been increased since. More than 40 municipalities across Wisconsin currently have wheel taxes of their own, ranging from $10 to $40.
The $30-per-vehicle tax goes into effect Jan. 1.
