NEW LONDON, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — A new museum is commemorating the enormous impact a former Packers quarterback and his wife had on the greater Green Bay area and beyond.
The Bart and Cherry Star Museum will open its doors to the public on June 21. It’s located in New London, where the couple helped found the Rawhide Boys Ranch — now called Rawhide Youth Services — in 1965. The program provides residential treatment and campus-based counseling to at-risk Wisconsin youth and has served more than 750 individuals to date.
Rawhide, the Starr family, the Green Bay Packers and the National Football League (NFL) worked closely to bring the museum’s collection of memorabilia and carefully-curated exhibits to life.
The museum highlights all aspects of Bart and Cherry’s lives, from the history of Bart’s time as a Packers player and coach to his and Cherry’s involvement with Rawhide.
Also on display is the red Corvette Stingray convertible Bart won as MVP of Super Bowl II, which he gave to Rawhide in 1968 as a raffle donation to raise much-needed funding for the program.
Organizers say the museum aims to showcase the values and character of Bart and Cherry, their journey together and their legacy of dedicated service to local youth and communities.
Bart Starr Jr. thinks the museum is “a beautiful tribute” to his parents.
“It’s very humbling, as you might imagine, to see so many beautiful memories come together in a cohesive form. And I think it will really resonate with the individuals who come through this,” said Starr Jr. “This is truly astonishing. I’d give anything if Mom and Dad had the opportunity to see this. I think they would be even more humbled than I am.”
The grand opening of The Bart and Cherry Starr Museum will feature Rawhide’s famous Fish Fry. The museum will be open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. To read more about the museum, click here.
