TWO RIVERS, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — Getting out and doing a little bird watching is a popular pastime in Wisconsin.
Along the Lakeshore, many events celebrating birds and the outdoors are happening this weekend.
In Two Rivers, a larger-than-life creation is drawing some attention.
The city’s latest art project, a large mural on Washington St., promotes downtown ahead of the weekend Wisconsin Society for Ornithology Convention, based at the Lighthouse Inn, just down the road.
“These are all the birds that live in this area. We’re really excited about it. It’s a huge wall. We just got started as you can see,” said Michael Ditmer, Two Rivers Main Street Board Member.
Nancy Nabak, Woodland Dunes Nature Center Communication Coordinator, is organizing the three-day event.
“We will be having guest speakers, and field trips, where people are going to be going out, to different areas. Because we’re along the Lakeshore, we’re incredible for migratory stop-overs. And right now, is a perfect time of year,” said Nabak.
Nabak says convention compliments the 50th anniversary Woodland Dunes Nature Center celebration, where there will be hikes, breakfast, and even a trip down memory lane.
“We’re also going to have an open microphone session. Where people can share their stories. I’m pretty sure some of our first naturalists, who were here with us in the very beginning, are going to come back from Illinois, and share some of their stories of what it was like when they were bird banding,” she said.
Back downtown, Nabak says the mural is already having an impact.
“I think it’s fantastic. I think it’s a great way to draw awareness around the joy that birds bring to us. And at the same time, maybe will start to learn a little bit more about the birds, and hopefully find out ways that we, as individuals can help them out,” she said.
Ditmer agrees. “I think people are really excited about this new mural. Especially because people do, in this community, do appreciate our natural environment,” he said.
Ditmer says the mural could be completed in a few weeks.
