GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — An effort to support and raise awareness for homeless veterans will kick off in Green Bay this week.
The Milo Huempfner VA Clinic will be hosting the 14th annual VA2K Walk and Roll; an event that encourages an active lifestyle and support of homeless veterans.
The nationwide effort calls for donations of food, hygiene products, clothes, cleaning supplies, and more. All donations go toward supporting veterans who are experiencing and overcoming homelessness.
The walk will take place in Green Bay on Wednesday, May 15 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Milo Huempfner VA Outpatient Clinic and is completely free to the public.
At the event, VA Whole Health will offer a resource table for Veterans and staff, as well as wellness and homeless prevention resource information.
“These veterans served our country and what we need to do is we need to be there for them and give back to them,” says Ken Corry, the Green Bay VA2K Public Affairs Officer. “Give them support. I was struggling one time myself being a veteran. I got home from war, and did four tours between Iraq and Afghanistan, three years over there. I got back and I was struggling with alcohol, depression, anxiety, getting in fights, in and out of relationships. I struggled a lot and I needed a lot of resources. I reached out for help and it was some of these resources just like the VA at the clinic that gave me that step up and gave me the resources to be better.”
The V-A will also be open enrolling veterans who are newly-eligible for services through the expanded Toxic Exposure Act.
That is happening from 1 to 3 at the V-A clinic.
