(WTAQ-WLUK) — A 20-year-old Fond du Lac man was arrested on Saturday morning after a single car accident.
Officials say that at approximately 1:29 A.M., officers responded to a report of an accident near N. Peters Avenue and Security Drive. The report detailed that a driver had struck a tree, they were unresponsive, and that the vehicle was smoking.
When officers arrived, they observed a 20-year-old Fond du Lac resident alert and locked in the vehicle. FDLPD Officers also observed that the vehicle struck a light pole, a stop sign, and a street sign. The vehicle was also smoking.
The man refused to exit the vehicle, after which an officer broke out a window on the vehicle in preparation to remove the driver if the vehicle started on fire.
The driver then reversed the vehicle away and fled. In a pursuit that reached approximately 40 miles per hour, they drove through a fence in the 700 block of N. Peters Avenue and continued to a nearby field, where he struck a second fence alongside an unoccupied vehicle.
Officers deployed the Bear Cat, an armored rescue vehicle, to limit the vehicle’s ability to flee. Once the Bear Cat arrived, the driver exited the vehicle and was taken into custody on charges of Operating While Intoxicated, Fleeing, and Recklessly Endangering Safety.
A Fond du Lac Police Department Officer received minor injuries while breaking the window of the vehicle.
The accident and pursuit are under active investigation. No further details are being released at this time.
