(WTAQ-WLUK) — Some Northeast Wisconsin Republicans had some choice words for 8th District Congressman Mike Gallagher, following his decision to leave his position earlier than originally thought.
Last month, Gallagher announced he would not seek re-election for his fifth term.
He followed that announcement up by saying he would step down April 19, before his term ends in January of 2025.
That means a portion of Northeast Wisconsin will be without representation in the House until next year.
Business magazine Forbes is reporting Gallagher is taking a job with defense contractor Palantir after he resigns. Palantir Technologies is a software company which handles data analytics, and works in counter terrorism investigations and operations.
A statement released Friday from the Oconto and Waupaca County Republicans read in part:
Mike Gallagher’s recent decision to resign from Congress is a dereliction of duty and is a betrayal of the citizens of the 8th Congressional District and Oconto and Waupaca County Republicans.
Similar criticism has been echoed by other groups, including the Republican Party of Brown County.
Two Republicans have launched campaigns for the seat: State Sen. Andre Jacque of De Pere and former State Sen. Roger Roth of Appleton. Republican consultant Alex Bruesewitz also is considering a run.
