The High School Winter Sports seasons are rushing toward the finish line. The W.I.A.A. will crown boys and girls hockey champions along with team wrestling titles this weekend. The state hockey tournament opened in Middleton with Division 2 boys and the girls semifinal games. The De Pere Co-Op Bay Area Ice Bears will get a shot at a second straight girls hockey title after rallying past River Falls 5-4 Thursday. Trailing 4-2, the Ice Bears got even before Faye Brunke netted the eventual game winning goal in the third period. De Pere will face D.C. Everest, a 4-1 winner over Sun Prairie in the title game on Saturday. Fon duLac St. Mary’s Springs beat River Falls 2-1 in the boys division 2 semifinal. Top seed New Richmond advanced 8-4 over Tomahawk. The Division 1 semifinals Friday will have Green Bay Notre Dame face Edgewood. The Tritons are also on the brink of back to back championships. Chippewa Falls and Brookfield East met in the other semifinal game.
The team wrestling tournament begins Friday night at the Kohl Center with Division 1 quarterfinal and semifinal matches. Kaukauna is the top seed in Division 1 and they’ll open against Homestead. Semifinal matches in Divisions 2 and 3 take place Saturday morning. Luxemburg-Casco is the one seed going up against Kewaskum and Coleman will face off against Weyauwega-Fremont in their semifinal.
It’s Regional weekend for the boys basketball tournament. Semifinal games take place Friday night with regional champions crowned on Saturday.
The Girls are just one game away from setting the field at next week’s state tournament at the Resch Center. Sectional semifinal games were played Thursday night. In Division 1, top seed Hortonville rolled past Eau Claire Memorial 87-58. The Polar Bears will face FVA rival Neenah for the sectional title. The Rockets handled Hudson 69-39. That final will be played at Appleton East Saturday at 1:00 PM. Hartford ended Kimberly’s season 83-63. The Notre Dame Tritons are on the brink of history in Division 2. Notre Dame crushed Green Bay Southwest 93-17 to move on. Menomonie is next for the Tritons who are now just three wins away from becoming the first girls team to win four consecutive state titles. That sectional final takes place at Wausau East High School at 1:00 PM. In Division 3, Wittenberg-Birnamwood knocked out Freedom 43-41. They will face Xavier, a 57-41 winner over Winneconne in the final at Brillion at 1:00 PM. The area’s Division 4 sectional final will feature Laconia, a 71-53 winner over St. Mary Catholic, against Sheboygan Lutheran which defeated Valders 51-35. In Division 5, Lena improved to 26-2 with a come from behind 48-43 victory over Wabeno/Laona. They will face Pittsville in Antigo for a trip to state
