GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — Maybe this is the year you start the process of tracing your family roots. The Brown County Library is making it easy and free with their Genealogy 101 series.
Let the experts guide you along the way Saturdays from January 20 to April 6, 2024. Participants will learn how to research, record, and preserve family histories.
Local history librarian Mary Jane Herber says its about more than just the statistics.
“Otherwise you’re just dealing with names and dates. So find those stories about something Fred did when he was 12 years old, or ‘Margret, wow she was a great cook,’ that gives depth to a family history,” said Herber.
Officials at the Brown County Library recommend a few books that can help:
- The Family Tree Problem Solver, by Marsha Hoffman Rising
- The Sleuth Book for Genealogists, by Emily Anne Croom
- A Genealogist’s Guide to Discovering Your Immigrant & Ethnic Ancestors, by Sharon Carmack
- Family History 101: A Beginner’s Guide to Finding Your Ancestors, by Marcia D. Melnyk
- The Hidden Half of the Family: A Sourcebook for Women’s Genealogy, by Christina Schaefer
- Genealogical Resources of the Civil War Era, by William Dollarhide
All are available from Brown County Library.
