HOWARD, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – The number of dead birds found at Duck Creek Quarry is now up to 26, according to the village.
Dead birds were first discovered at the quarry on Monday and animal officials have been working since then to try to figure out a potential cause.
Matt Atkinson, the animal control officer for Howard, says officials are checking the area two to three times per day and removing sick or dead geese as needed.
Quarry trails remain closed to the public until further noticed pending lab results and any other precautions that might be needed.
Coyote decoys have been setup in an effort to prevent large groups of geese on the quarry. Atkinson reports these measures have been working so far and they are finding fewer dead and sick birds.
The public is encouraged to report any dead waterfowl or birds of prey to animal control, regardless of the amount. The phone number is 920-530-1044.
