FOND DU LAC, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — A police dog that was shot in the line of duty over the weekend is up and walking again — with some help.
The Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s Office posted on Facebook video of the dog, Iro, walking Tuesday afternoon. There were bandages or casts on all four of Iro’s legs, and several people were helping support him as he walked.
“The goal today was to get him to sit up,” Sheriff Ryan Waldschmidt wrote in the Facebook post. “He had other plans. He stood up and said, ‘outta my way, I’m going for a walk to get my tennis ball!'”
“Elated is an understatement. He’s feeling your encouragement and prayers. We are truly humbled by the support of this community and far beyond, and his care team continues to work very hard on his recovery. On behalf of everyone here at the Sheriff’s Office, we can’t thank you all enough!”
Iro had surgery after the Saturday shooting.
Iro was shot during an exchange of gunfire between a suspect, and police and sheriff’s officials. The suspect was killed at the scene.
The Wisconsin Department of Justice’s Division of Criminal Investigation is leading the investigation into the shooting.
