APPLETON, WI (WTAQ) — The Appleton Department of Public Works creates and maintains maps that help parents, guardians and kids find the best route to safely walk and bike to their elementary school.
The maps display streets with and without sidewalks, intersection stops and yields, traffic signals, marked crosswalks, signed school zones, crossing guard posts and neighborhood destinations.
“In some cases, the most direct route is not the preferred route,” said Michael Hardy, Assistant Traffic Engineer for the Appleton Department of Public Works. “Sometimes you may have to walk a couple blocks out of the way to make sure you get to a place that’s the safest to cross.”
These maps are created at the start of every school year:
- Ferber Elementary School
- Foster Elementary School
- Franklin Elementary School
- Highlands Elementary School
- Horizons Elementary School
- Huntley Elementary School
- Jefferson Elementary School
- Johnston Elementary School
Additionally, there is an interactive walking map. As conditions change throughout the school year, this map will be updated accordingly.
