Taking on the best and worst teams in the National League East on the road this week was a challenge for the Milwaukee Brewers. They got swept last weekend in Atlanta, no shame in that against the team with the best record in MLB, because the Crew put up 18 runs in the three games. On to last place Washington where the Brewers have only themselves to blame for dropping two out of three games including the Wednesday afternoon rubber game in horrible fashion.
The Nationals beat the Brewers 3-2, ending All Star closer Devin Williams’ run of 10 straight scoreless outings by plating two runs in the bottom of the ninth for a 3-2, run-off victory. Williams got into trouble allowing a walk and a hit but an error loaded the bases. A hard ground ball to third basemen Andruw Monasterio was gloved cleanly but his thrown home to catcher William Contreras was wide of the plate which allowed the tying run to score and before Contreras could track down the ball and fire to Williams covering home, Ildemaras Vargas never stopped running from second and he slid across the plate to win the game. Talk about unearned run pain.
The Brewers took a 1-0 lead in the second on Tyrone Taylor’s solo home run. Starter Wade Miley, making his first mound appearance since coming off the injured list, was on a limited pitch count but he got through four innings, allowing a run on three hits, issuing two walks with five strikeouts. Alex Call’s leadoff double in the third was followed by Jake Alu’s single that tied the game. A Christian Yelich double into the left field corner brought home Brice Turang in the top of the sixth giving Milwaukee a 2-1 lead and a bullpen so efficient in holding them of late, couldn’t on this day thanks to shaky defense.
Milwaukee returns home 58-51, holding second in the division and they’ll host two more struggling teams in a seven game stand at American Family Insurance with Pittsburgh coming to town for the weekend followed by a four game set with Colorado.
