GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — Shipping through the Port of Green Bay so far this year is pacing ahead of 2022.
Port officials say 243,926 tons of cargo moved through the port in May. The yearly total through the end of the month was 429,992 tons, 54% greater than the total through the end of May 2022.
“The Port is an economic barometer for northeast Wisconsin, so it’s always good to see strong shipping numbers early in the season. We’re very pleased with our first two months,” port director Dean Haen said in a news release. “While we can’t predict what will happen over the course of a season, this is a good sign so far.”
The leading import in May was salt, with 95,186 tons. There were 53,624 tons of limestone, 40,096 tons of petroleum products, 22,694 tons of cement, 7,454 tons of wood pulp and 4,081 tons of coal imported.
Twenty-one ships entered the port in May, three more than last year’s count.
