APPLETON, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – Lawrence University is starting a new tradition with the beginning of another school year.
After a year in office, Lawrence University President Laurie Carter — the school’s first African American president in its 175-year history — is excited to continue building new traditions.
With the completion of a new welcome archway, Lawrence’s Class of 2026 will be the first group of first-years to walk through the arch to Main Hall for Carter’s welcome speech.
This class certainly won’t be the last, though, as Lawrence looks to make it a lasting tradition.
“We want them to really think about their place in the world as learners, as life-long learners,” said Carter. “This walk through the arch really signifies the deep learning that will be going on here for the next four years for these students.”
The arch replaces a small cement sign that used to be located on the corner of Drew Street and College Avenue.
The arch’s tarp was removed late last week. Leaders in the Appleton and Lawrence communities, Appleton Mayor and Lawrence alumnus Jake Woodford, officially cut the ribbon Tuesday afternoon.
