GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) The Green Bay school board Thursday unanimously approved a pay change for substitute teachers: an increase from what it had been paying before 2021, but a decrease from what it paid during the pandemic.
“I know it’s a difficult time to be asking for an increase, especially with the budget cliff we’re addressing. So I’m sorry to put you in this position but we feel like, after an analysis of what other districts are offering, that this shows, it demonstrates our commitment to continuing to attract our high quality guest teachers ,” interim supt. Vicki Bayer told the board.
A few school board members offered brief comments in support of the plan. No one spoke against it.
Prior to COVID-19, full day substitutes were paid $150 per day. That was increased to $190 during the pandemic. The new rate is $175.
The district’s survey of neighboring districts revealed rates of $110 to $168 per day, Bayer said.
A FOX 11 review, according to a sampling of other district websites, found these substitute rates: Ashwaubenon, $160 per day; De Pere, $24 per hour; Wrightstown, $140 per day, Appleton, $130 per day; Oconto, $110 per day; Kimberly, $130 per day.
